Another list making app? Revolutionary idea!
Well, before the likes of Google Keep caught up, it was. Who doesn't want to input pictures in your notes, be reminded of something when you arrive at a particular location, or simply use #hashtags to create folders via – you guessed it – yup, tags? We identified a need and well, a few years back, you would have wanted Hashnote.
Customer Interviews & Feature Ideation
—
The creator of Hashnote had heard rumblings from his users about several feature requests. He was struggling with how to best prioritize and build. I came on board to help. I began by combing through the customer reviews in the Google Play store, and reading all the customer correspondence he'd had since the inception of the app.
From there, I sent out a survey to the Hashnote mailing list to get an idea of what wanted to be able to do most. Then, I interviewed 8 different Hashnote users to learn more about how they use Hashnote, and why they use it that way.
Doing this digging helped illuminate what features and functionality mattered to users the most. So, this is what we decided to build first.
IA & Usability Testing
—
After concepting the new features, I created a workable low-fidelity prototype that we used to conduct usability tests with 12 participants. We observed how they reacted to what we’d built, and identified any usability flaws in the redesign. We ended up adding several features: the inclusion of pictures to a note, time & geo-location reminders, cloud-syncing across desktop & mobile, and backgrounds that corresponded to the time of day.

The designs shown here include the nighttime view: the apps’ background color would adjust to the time of day.
